Brexit and green cards
January 2021 – Brexit and Green Cards
With the Brexit transition period ending on 31st December 2020 at 11 PM, we at Victor want to make the Green Card process clearer for our policyholders.
Policyholders scheduled to travel to the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), Andorra or Switzerland after this date will require a Green Card. This will also include any trips taken in 2020 that extend past the 1st January 2021.
The Green Card system was changed on the 1st July 2020 so policyholders no longer need a physical Green Card in their possession, however, they will need a black and white printed document which will be recognised as valid in participating EU/EEA countries as well as Andorra and Switzerland.
For Policy Numbers beginning with NKT-MCV
A Green Card can be requested in the usual way via our portal www.victorforbrokers.co.uk by selecting that foreign use is required against the vehicle that requires such cover and then selecting which countries they will visit. You will also need to provide details of the trailer being pulled including the trailer make and chassis number as a separate Green Card is required for the trailer.
For Policy Numbers beginning with HL HVI or HL FLE
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request a Green Card, stating the policy number, dates of travel and the registration number of the vehicle requiring cover. You will also need to provide details of the trailer being pulled including the trailer make and chassis number as a separate Green Card is required for the trailer.
For Policy Numbers ending with the letter M
Please email email@example.com to request a Green Card, stating the following information:
- Policy number and policyholder name
- Dates of travel
- Name/s of drivers
- Names/s of counties to be visited
- Vehicle registration
Once your Green Card requests have been received, our team will issue the relevant document and email a copy of the Green Card in PDF format for use by our policyholders. It’s important that these are printed prior to any travel as an electronic copy/email of the Green Card isn’t acceptable or recognised by authorities abroad as evidence of insurance.
Please ensure any Green Card requests are sent 5 days in advance of travel.
Any requests for travel outside of the EU/EEA, Andorra or Switzerland will need to be referred to Victor by calling 03330 100 300 and selecting the relevant team.
What documents will the Policyholder need to travel within the EU/EEA?
If the policyholder is planning to drive to an EU/EEA member state, Andorra or Switzerland once the transition period comes to an end, as well as a physical copy of their Green Card and Certificate of Motor Insurance, they may also require an international driving permit, unless they’re only driving to the Republic of Ireland. In addition, when travelling in any EU/EEA country, Andorra or Switzerland a GB sticker must be displayed on all vehicles that are registered in all parts of the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland).
